For years enterprise business have been leveraging mobile computing to streamline their operations, reduce costs and generate revenue. These benefits are every bit applicable to government agencies as well, and many state, provincial, municipal and counties are excited about custom designed applications for their unique operational requirements. A few examples of how government agencies are utilizing these applications to serve their specific requirements are eCitation and Asset Management.

The cost of paper-based citations is high: Every year, agencies lose millions of dollars. Illegible handwriting or technical error cause large numbers of tickets to be dismissed. Manual processes require officers to spend more time issuing tickets and generating paperwork – and less time protecting the public. Motorola’s mobile ticketing solution, known as eCitation, addresses these issues by automating the process. When officers carry a rugged handheld computer with an eCitation solution, a ticket can be easily and accurately issued in record time – often under a minute. Citation information is then sent to headquarters – seamlessly and automatically, letting the officer get back to protecting the public.

Federal, state, city and municipal government agencies own and are responsible for many different types of assets – from office equipment, computers, cell phones and fleets of vehicles to street signs, roadways and railways as well as equipment in wastewater and other plants and facilities. Keeping track of these assets is required to ensure timely inspections and maintenance are scheduled — and to meet accounting requirements, including compliance with GASB/Statement 34.
